Fernhills Palace is situated at an altitude of about 6,000 feet above sea level that lends a panoramic view of the Mountains and surrounding region.
Fernhills Palace was built by Captain F. Cotton who belonged to the Madras Engineers Regiment way back in 1844 as his mansion. He named this Mansion as `Fernhills Bungalow’ and since then this palatial bungalow has had many owners and its name even change as per its usage.
Fernhills Palace was once transformed into a famous Club Hotel of Ooty named `Moonisami’ with intriguing tales to tell. Some believe that even today, in the still of the night, you can hear the echoes of ladies laughing in the Ballroom at the excitement of winning bets and the piano music serenading across the hall with soft footsteps gliding as they dance.
Fernhills Palace was then acquired by a 12 year old Prince, H. H. Chamarajendra Wadiyar X, who was first and youngest Indian Royalty to ever buy an English Bungalow in Ooty. He purchased the Fernhills plot of 40 acres for Rs. 10,000 at 1873 and since then, Fernhills earned its royal status and is synonymous with the Wadiyar dynasty. It was transformed from a Palatial Mansion into a Heritage Hotel in Ooty to serve a pool of tourists who seek accommodation amidst a historical ambience and luxurious comforts.
Today, Fernhills is managed by His Highness Srikanta Datta Narasimharaja Wadiyar of the Wadiyar Dynasty under the flagship of WelcomHeritage Group and is considered as one of the best Heritage Hotels in Ooty with an attractive history to tell its guests. Over 167 year ago, this 1844 Mansion depicts red and white stones reminiscent of a typical English mansion style house.
